And we’re off with a bang! The 2014/2015 European tech conference kicked off this week at the European Pirate Summit at the Odonien in Cologne, Germany. Till Ohrmann and Manuel Koelman and team put together another fantastic Pirate Week, culminating with Pirate Camp and The European Pirate Summit.
As to be expected, the artist’s playground that is Odonien served as a Mad Max inspired backdrop for a spirited round of pirate flavored networking, talks, and insights. Capped off only by the official opening of the Summit with the European tech community’s burning man. A bit smaller in scale, but the effect is none the less dramatic.
The following day, more talks ensued with LDV Capital Evan Nisselson opening the day. Later that afternoon, the Summit heard 12 teams pitch for a coveted ProSiebenSat1 Accelerator grand prize of 25.000€ for 5% equity. This years winner was Viblast hailing from Sofia, Bulgaria. The concept of Viblast is simple enough, and with mass scaling of HD video, perhaps an easy choice to see why an accelerator with roots in broadcast media would take particular interest in this technology. Viblast has received seed funding from Sofia based Launchhub.
The European Pirate Summit is a fantastic European technology conference opener, and a great time and place to reconnect after a summer away. Where else can you see Mike Butcher ride in on a robotic horse to deliver a keynote? And how many events have you been to include fire breathing dragons? And a burning man? If Till and Manuel’s annual opener is any indication, there are bound to be some incredible things being presented this year. More opportunities presented, more inspired startups, and some good days (and evenings) ahead.
Enjoy, and until the next shoot – Dan
